The Mystery of Google & the Secret Menu

It took me five minutes before I noticed…

Google reader search bar

Yes, it is. A search bar for Google Reader!

Let me tell you - I can’t count the times I’ve thought “Where did I see that? I’ll just search fo….Oh yeah, I’m using the only Google product that doesn’t do search!”

There’s a lesson in there, but it’s not what you think…

It has to do with a little Mexican joint just down the street from me. (How’s that for a segue?)

Every Friday for two years, I’ve eaten there. When they see us coming they start stocking the table with queso & Dos Equis. But about a month ago I noticed something…

Some of the people there had food that I didn’t recognize. We’re talking crazy seafood affairs served in giant margarita glasses. Suddenly my little enchilada doesn’t seem so special.

Why don’t I have what they have? Why don’t I even know what it is? There’s nothing like it on the menu!

But get this - this restaurant has a secret menu! A SECRET MENU!

Do you think I waited until next Friday? Hell no, I had to go back on MONDAY to see what this was all about.

And when I asked my waiter, he said: “We’re happy to make something special for you. But don’t tell anyone else.”

Now that’s just masterful salesmanship.

They’re making a killing with their secret menu. They’re making people crazy to buy what they’re selling. And all it’s based on an idea that’s so simple it could be a mantra.

Don’t give people what they want. And then give it to them.
